Playstation 3! why cant i go online!? ?

I got a Plastation 3 for christmas and i have been trying ever since to play online. But every time i go on the sign up for Ps3 network it says “Connection failure, Go to Network settings”. Now this is frustrating because i have broadbrand and the ethernet cable, and i plugged it into the playstation and had it connected to the internet but when i went to sign up the same thing happened!
Can some one help?

Try to see if maybe there is a firmware update? also try rebooting everything(the cable modem, the playstation, and what every else is plugged in or relevant) I think your best bet is the system update. i just got my own a few days ago(i had a other one i had to share). and it was telling me connection failed because i needed to update my system software.
