How does the Xbox Live marketplace points work? Can you only buy them, or earn them too?

I just got a Xbox 360 the other day, and I was wondering if someone could explain to me how the marketplace points work. Do you have to only purchase them, or do you also earn them playing games? (i.e. playing the demo discs, ect.) Thank you so much for the advice!

Marketplace Points is the Xbox LIVE Game Marketplace currency. Instead of using actual dollars and cents Microsoft had the great idea to make a very complicated way to buy items instead. So here is how it breaks down.

You can buy Marketplace Points directly on the console itself or buy different incremements in redeem cards from retail stores.

Directly on your Xbox 360 you can buy:

500 MS Points $10
1,000 MS Points $12
2,000 MS Points

Redeem codes bought in store:

1,600 MS Points $20
4,000 MS Points $49

You can only earn Microsoft Points in the 1 vs. 100 Beta. However it will take about 4-6 weeks to recieve your prize and it is very rare you will win.

I hope this answers your question.
